Creating a product or website is much like building a house. A plan must be put into place and you need to lay a foundation. Without this foundation, your house is likely to weeble and wobble and one day come crashing down. Mood boards help to establish all of the baselines that will eventually go into a style guide: color palettes, typography, layout, image treatments.

When we start a new project and sit down with our client, we plan everything out and task every little thing to be completed. We get a sense of what the client’s needs are and then break off to create a mood board for the client. Here’s why this is so vitally important. We design for the client, not for ourselves. The purpose is to establish user experience patterns by illustrating interface elements and demonstrate various ways to visualize content. By showing what potential interactions look and feel like on the mood board.

A good mood board can be completed in a few hours, perhaps a few days or a week depending on how large the project is and it’s complications. Executing a proper mood board and wireframes for your project are vital to the future of its success.
